One day I was explaining to a friend that I wanted to write a blog post about self-sabotage because it’s a topic that often comes up with my clients. As I was sharing more about what I intended to write about, she said, “I’ll start it for you!” because she could relate. Here’s her story and then I’ll get into more about self-sabotage, what it really is and what it means if you’re feeling like you’re getting in the way of your health and weight goals.

We sat down with former Tribe facilitator, Dr. Bill Epperly for a chat about spirituality, mindfulness & meditation. It was an enlightening conversation!
1. What are some key things you share with people who have never experienced your class/ workshop/ experience? There are lots of misconceptions out there about what it is to be spiritual, what spiritual life is really all about. To me, spiritual life is first and foremost about life, about becoming fully alive as a human being. I like to say that spirituality is the science of human aliveness. That’s what we’re awakening to, to greater and greater human aliveness. Celebrate Women’s Health Month with 3 simple daily practices that deepen your relationship with your body for greater overall health and well-being.
Please note: these practices benefit ALL BEINGS as they focus on the dynamic of feminine aspects vs. the female body, traits that we all carry and which we all have the ability to access for improved daily health and vitality. Celebrate Earth Day with us this Sunday by committing to reduce your use of single use plastics.
Did you know that 70% of all plastic produced ends up in natural ecosystems? Only 10% gets recycled. The chemicals leached by those plastics is very problematic for our health as well as the health of the planet. How much Plastic is in the ocean? ![]() One of my clients has had abdominal pain for a while. At the start of the session, as she lay comfortably on the massage table, I put my hand on her feet and tuned in. CranioSacral Therapists call this “Arching;” that is, we read the client’s energy, and sense which areas of the body or psyche is calling for attention. In the case of this client, I first noticed that she felt more grounded that she had on her previous session. Her feet and legs didn’t feel as if they were floating. She felt less tentative. I verbalized that and she confirmed my reading. Then I considered doing some Zero Balancing to amplify that groundedness; to improve the energy flow through her legs, but I sensed that the constriction might be originating in her pelvis/belly. When I put my hands on her lower abdomen, I did feel a lot of what you might call tension. March is Clean Living month at Tribe, a time for picking up the pieces of any failed New Year Resolutions, dusting ourselves off and starting out again with a more manageable approach.
Many of us set unrealistic goals for ourselves at the start of a new year, then beat ourselves up when we fail to meet those self-imposed expectations. By implementing one small change that stretches you just a little bit, and turning it into a daily habit, you’ll feel more capable of adding the next habit and getting it to stick. Build up these tiny habits over time and they are much more likely to become long-term lifestyle changes that will have a positive impact on your health. Heather offers her incredible self-care classes (as demonstrated above) at Tribe on the 4th Thursdays of every month from 7-9pm in addition to operating a private practice in massage therapy in Chicago. We sat down to learn about what inspires, influences and informs this community member.
with Guest Blogger Aline Defiglia LCSW![]() Two people were studying in a small, stuffy room in a University library. One person wanted the window open, one person wanted it closed. Instead of focusing on solutions, (whether the window would be opened or closed) they concentrated on needs and resolved the problem by coming up with another alternative- opening a window in the next room. This provided fresh air for the person who wanted it and, at the same time, prevented the north wind from blowing directly on the person who objected to being in a strong draft. Is it really possible to craft a win/win method of solving many of the most entrenched interpersonal issues we face? Can we be released from…. win/lose CAPITULATION and DOMINATION? mini-lose/mini-lose COMPROMISE? lose/lose DENIAL and AVOIDANCE? Collaborative problem solving requires the use of listening skills, assertion skills, and the 1-2-3 dialogue or conflict resolution method. Let’s go through the six-step process step by step. Pay attention to the common pitfalls of using this method! with Guest Blogger Aline Defiglia LCSW When people get emotionally escalated, they are actually fundamentally different people than when they are calm.

In a world where we are often harshly judged for identifying and revealing our needs, doing so can be very frightening, especially for women who are socialized to ignore their own needs while caring for others. with Guest Blogger Laura B. Folkes When it comes to clean living, one aspect to consider is clean eating. It seems like this is a topic around food and diet that has become more prominent in the news and media, which is exciting for someone like me who is a Certified Holistic Health Coach.

Discover the Benefits of Experimental Breathing with Guest Blogger Shannon Lynne Sullivan12/14/2016 I have a nearly impossible task for you—don’t worry, it will only take a second. Without changing your breath in any way, notice the movements your breathing creates. Did you succeed? If so, you are more talented than I.
For me, attending to breathing feels like tracking a wild animal. I encounter imprints suggesting what has come before—sometimes only a moment has passed, sometimes I discover a fossil. When I do manage to arrive in the presence of my live breathing, it often interrupts its activity to turn a suspicious eye to my intent. A moment where I manage to come with enough quiet to witness my breathing undisturbed is a rare and highly valued gift. This practice of attending without interferring is a skill we cultivate in Awareness Through Movement®. Moshe Feldenkrais is reported to have said: “When you know what you do, you can do what you want.” To truly know what you do requires the ability to experience without changing. Awareness is a prerequisite for choice. July is LGBTQIA Empowerment Month!
