One of my clients has had abdominal pain for a while. At the start of the session, as she lay comfortably on the massage table, I put my hand on her feet and tuned in. CranioSacral Therapists call this “Arching;” that is, we read the client’s energy, and sense which areas of the body or psyche is calling for attention. In the case of this client, I first noticed that she felt more grounded that she had on her previous session. Her feet and legs didn’t feel as if they were floating. She felt less tentative. I verbalized that and she confirmed my reading. Then I considered doing some Zero Balancing to amplify that groundedness; to improve the energy flow through her legs, but I sensed that the constriction might be originating in her pelvis/belly. When I put my hands on her lower abdomen, I did feel a lot of what you might call tension.
We did some dialoguing with her abdomen/belly. She said that if her belly were an animal, it would be a wolf. We talked to the wolf who let us know that he was protecting the client from certain people. The wolf eventually agreed to communicate to the client more directly; he agreed that in the future he would be more protective and less aggressive, that he would not cause the client pain. Soon her belly relaxed. Then I sensed some tension lower in her belly -- her bladder felt “constricted.” We talked about that and the issue of anger came up -- that she hesitates to express anger because she doesn’t want to blow up like her parents did. The word “pissy” came to mind. She didn’t want to piss people off, or be pissy, or piss on people.
Just tuning in to the emotions and sensations in her belly/pelvis helped the energy flow better, and the discomfort to ease up. The dialoguing and “negotiating” with the wolf (which is a part of herself) and with her constricted bladder, increased the relief. I imagine that in the future, she will experience less discomfort, and that any discomfort she does feel will dissipate more easily.
In addition to easing discomfort, Lyrical Healing Mind/Body therapy helps people relax, which helps the body/psyche heal itself. In that way, problems can be prevented before they become big problems. And always, clients can tune in, get insights, and feel valued.
