ABOUT THIS MODALITY
For thousands of years, acupuncture has straddled the line between magic and science. It is a thorough, methodically organized system based on empirical research that is constantly evolving as it encounters new information and technology.
On the one hand, acupuncture works by modulating the human body’s energy field, or qi. Acupuncture meridians serve as conduits for the qi; the points along the meridians are like switches that can be stuck in the on position, causing an overload, or blown out, causing a blackout. Inserting a needle is a way of redirecting the qi, sealing a leak, or adding extra energy into the system.
On the other hand, acupuncture works by restoring homeostasis to the nervous system. We, as human beings, were clearly not designed for the world we inhabit. The nonstop daily stresses of work, traffic, dirty air, poor food, and relationships leave us exhausted. No wonder so many of us have high blood pressure, chronic stomach aches, and insomnia! Acupuncture causes the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters, allowing our minds and bodies to relax, rest, and heal.
